Can you name one song by Phish? I couldn’t even
if my life depended upon it. My knowledge gap in the jamband world isn’t stopping the
folks at the Jammy Awards from presenting the band with a lifetime achievement award
at the seventh annual shindig taking place on May 7 at the Wamu Theater at Madison Square Garden.
The event will be co-hosted by Warren Haynes and Grace Potter and will feature
performances from Booker T. Jones, Christian McBride, Fab Faux, Galactic, Glenn
Tillbrook of Squeeze, HeadCount All-Stars, Jake Cinninger of Umphrey's McGee,
James Carter, Joe Russo, Jon Gutwillig, Kyle Hollingsworth of String Cheese
Incident, Los Lonely Boys, Marc Brownstein, Matisyahu, Page McConnell, Rose
Hill Drive, Sharon Jones, Tea Leaf Green and Todd Park Mohr.
Obligatory press gush from Jammys producer Jonathan Schwartz: "We're
ecstatic with the initial Jammys lineup. The level of musicianship and
the community of artists coming together at the Jammy Awards is something that
we're all proud of. From Booker T. and Sharon Jones to Galactic and Page
McConnell, this year is stacked."

English music weekly New Musical Express has announced the shortlists for each of the 19 categories of the first-ever NME Awards USA. The ceremony will take place at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles on April 23. Don’t blame the ‘zine’s editors if you don’t like the selection of nominees because the list was apparently compiled through votes “by NME.com's online American audience.” The next round of voting kicks off today.
The Killers are surprisingly nominated in four categories, a milestone not lost on NME’s editor Conor McNicholas, who puts a happy spin on the band's achievement: "It's great to see The Killers nominated in so many categories. NME has supported them from the outset, and they've already picked up several awards in the UK; let's see if they can have the same success in their home country. With Arctic Monkeys also in the running to be big winners of the night, plus tough competition from Kings Of Leon, Foo Fighters and White Stripes, the inaugural NME Awards USA is shaping up to be an incredible night."
NME Awards will be broadcast live exclusively on NME’s MySpace page on April 23.

Today the artists on the Shortlist Music Prize were announced, among those the Arcade Fire, Justice, Feist and...zzzzzzzz....oh, sorry, I feel asleep at my desk there. I don't know about you, but after spending the entire month of December reading everyone's Top 10 list of albums from 2007, seeing the same acts over and over again is forcing my eyes to close quicker and quicker. Sure, the Shortlist Music Prize is sort of a fun, quirky idea, originally intended to upset the pop boom of the 90's, but come ON people. Of the acts listed, which, might I add, are voted upon by the apparent taste-makers of the industry, Burial was the only cool inclusion. Haven't Arcade Fire and Feist been on this list already? Are people not realizing the fact that Justice isn't that good, and that Stars albums could be mashed up together to sound, well, exactly the same?
Maybe I'm just bitter.
Below is the complete list of the Shortlist Music Prize nominees. Who would you pick instead? Who would you vote for here? Am I just totally list-ed out at this point?
Finalists For Sixth Annual Shortlist Music Prize:
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Burial - Untrue
Feist - The Reminder
Justice - Cross
LCD Soundsystem - Sound Of Silver
M.I.A. - Kala
Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
Stars - In Our Bedroom After The War
Wilco - Sky Blue Sky
Working For A Nuclear Free City - Businessmen And Ghosts

Who is going to win a Grammy this year? That’s been the discussion
amongst hardcore music lovers like yourself since the nominations were
made public last week. Everyone has an opinion about who deserves a nod
from the Academy, so we decided to ask Steven Smith, executive producer
and host of Fuse's NYC based Steven's Untitled Rock Show and The Sauce, for his two cents on the musical matter.
LWMB: Who should’ve been nominated this year for a Grammy?
Steven Smith: I
think Fall Out Boy got shafted. They crafted an amazing pop record and
pulled in some great producers. I feel they were slighted.
Who's most deserving of an award?
Kanye
is definitely most deserving. He'll tell you himself. Kanye creates
original music everyone can appreciate. He and Amy Winehouse. She
creates un-original music that is just wonderful to listen to.
Steve Vai and Joe Satriani were both nominated for Best Rock Instrumental Performances. Who is the best shredder?
Seeing as how Steve Vai was a student of Joe Satriani, I would definitely go with Eddie Van Halen. Seriously, Steve Vai.
The
Producer of the Year, Non-Classical category is an interesting one,
where a few legends are up against some new manes. Who's your money on?
Timbaland. The man is a machine. He's the most innovative producer in the game. And he's huge.
Ever think of franchising your show, like Steven's Untitled Country Show, or Steven's Untitled Gospel Show?
That's
a great idea. I would even go further and divide into sub genres like Steven's Untitled Skiffle Show or Stevens' Untitled Post Punk Art
Techno Noise Show.
Who would you rather sit next to at the award ceremony: Amy Winehouse or Britney Spears?
Britney Spears. I'll take a caesarian scar over those teeth any day.
Can you believe Mary J. Blige received eight nominations? I don't think she can sing very well, though she has a lot of heart.
I
disagree. I feel Mary J. is in a class all her own. She doesn't need to
do vocal gymnastics because of her "heart," and if U2 backs her then
she must be awesome. I saw her perform with them on the Vertigo Tour
and she was spectacular.
JT's FutureSex/LoveSounds is our guilty Grammy pleasure. What's yours?
Anything nominated for the best packaging grammy.
If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Who's gonna win in '08?
Sadly, not the American people.

Last week, Roseland Ballroom hosted the 2007 MTVu Woodies, an award show honoring the best in post-teen music, geared to a college audience. The two hour event was broadcast in its entirety on MTVu, while an abridged version was shown on MTV at an ungodly hour. Quite a tough award show to catch. For those of you who don't get MTVu (I'm guessing anyone who's reading this), the award show is available on MtvU.Com. Although the awards themselves are meaningless, this year included great performances from Lupe Fiasco, Tokyo Police Club, Spank Rock, Rilo Kiley, and The Academy Is. Between TPC's awkward red carpet moments, Pete Wentz's vanity, and Spank Rock's drunken hijinks, the show is worth a watch.

Should anyone care about Diesel’s U:Music awards? I don’t think so. Aside from promoting its line of
over designed Italo wear in an oh-so-subversive way (not!), the purpose of the
awards (which is now in its seventh year) is apparently to shed light on
unsigned musical talent around the world. Here’s how it works: Bands send in
their music and a panel of established musicians then create a shortlist of
finalists in individual categories.
Obligatory press gush from
Renzo Rosso, prez and found of Diesel: “At Diesel we have always been committed
to supporting new talents throughout all kinds of art. Diesel:U:Music is the
perfect platform to give concrete opportunities to upcoming musicians from all
over the world! Now in its seventh year, this edition is bigger and better than
ever, the standard of entries has been exceptionally high, we have had
submissions from Barbados to Bangladesh and New Zealand.”
Anyway, Diesel presented its awards at Koko last week in
London featuring performance from Wiley and MisShapes. The Features won the
public vote in indie/rock; Get the Shakes won for electronic act and Cool Kids
took top honors in urban/hip-hop. Honorary awards were presented to Joy
Division and Peter Saville in an attempt to legitimize the event.
Okay, the bands received their awards and Diesel got this
press mention. Now what?

<img src='http://blog.limewire.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/avril1.jpg' alt='Avril' / align="right" hspace="15">Forty-eight hours before Mayor Bloomberg decided to ditch the GOP in favor of a curious state of political ambiguity, Canada’s MuchMusic held its annual award gala in Toronto. As expected, Billy Talent, My Chemical Romance and Avril Lavigne were among the big winners of the night. Other winners included Nickelback, Fergie and Hillary Duff.
"This seriously means so much to me, I'm going to cry," said Lavigne before she closed the show with "Girlfriend" wearing a black sweat jacket with a Canadian flag on the back.
"I've never showed that side (of me) before but you can't really hide it when you feel like that," Lavigne told the Canadian Press on Monday of her tearful display. "It was a really big moment for me, five years into my career, my third record and just to still feel so much support and love, especially from Canada, it was a very cool moment."
How nice, eh?
