I’m kind of a sucker for good pop music, and I’ve been listening to the new Duffy album since that widely read but misanthropic music industry guru Bob Lefsetz exhorted his readers to check out her single “Mercy” several months ago. I wanted to see her on St. Patrick’s Day at Hiro Ballroom, but it coincided with a show down the street from Hiro at Highline – one of my favorite 80’s bands, the Hothouse Flowers.

(Aside: As chance would have it, I left Highline around the same time that Duffy was leaving Hiro. I couldn’t resist a paparazzi moment.)

I love “Rockferry,” start to finish, but then again, a) I love Dusty Springfield, Lulu and Nancy Sinatra, and b) I think I might be getting old. If you can get over the ironic hipster in you, and the hipster-druggie tragedy that is Amy Swinehouse, and ride the wave of 60’s-styled British soulsters that the UK is churning out, there is something really enjoyable about this nod to the past. Although, my fandom did not extend to making an effort to catch her at the Apollo, my finger hovered over the “Purchase Now” button on Ticketmaster, and I closed the window. But then I heard she was doing an in-store appearance at Virgin Megastore I decided to pop in for a listen and some photos.

I WISH I’d gotten a shot of the little 10 year old boy who was literally weeping outside the store to meet Duffy. I want to be friends with that kid and go to shows when he’s old enough.

As luck would have it, I ran into a neighbor of mine – I live WAY uptown, so this was strange. My neighbor isn’t much of a music buff, but was drawn in to the excitement of an impromptu live show. I thought it was interesting to talk to someone who wasn’t steeped in the hype, and the detractors, and the musically savvy rhetoric and trends, etc, etc, etc. She said to me, after Duffy was finished, “Wow, she’s like a young Janis Joplin.” Another great belter to compare her to.

To Fix the Gash In Your Head

aptbs.jpgThree cheers for NYC darlings A Place to Bury Strangers! Though astute readers of this blog may have heard hints and quick quips of the band mentioned across countless back entries, there's an explosion of news and interest surrounding them today, as they've just been confirmed as an opener for Nine Inch Nails' upcoming summer tour. The band was hand-picked alongside Crystal Castles, Deerhunter, White Williams, and Does It Offend You, Yeah, to namedrop the other indie-centric acts slated to support NIN's summer excursions.

That's not to say that A Place to Bury Strangers haven't developed a significant amount of interest beforehand, as several SXSW appearances and opening slots supporting the Jesus and Mary Chain, Battles, Holy Fuck, and the Brian Jonestown Massacre have brought the band to high attention with their fuzzy, aggressive brand of darkwave, brandishing them as "the loudest band in New York." Their intense live performances call to mind the experimentation and electronic pulse of Swans and early Wax Trax! recordings, while their fuzzed out overtones suggest devout worship of My Bloody Valentine and the Telescopes.

In testament to the band's sheer sonic force, they obliterated the amplifiers at Crash Mansion just before my band took the stage, much to our hilarity and chagrin. I can even remember a time long before then when their crowds were sparse, the only attendees being the band's girlfriends, management, and myself, so it's hard not to feel like a proud parent when this Brooklyn based outfit lands gigs such as these. Meanwhile, the band garnered tons of attention for their debut release, 2007's self-titled compilation on Killer Pimp records, which gathers ten of their previously self-released recordings onto disc or vinyl, whichever format you prefer...

In further A Place to Bury Strangers news, the band will take to Europe shortly before they join Nine Inch Nails down south, and a limited boxset of 7'' singles is slated for release in early May via Vacancy Records (I've already preordered mine, and I suggest you do the same). For any devout New York City fan with a little travel money in the bank, the upcoming string of A Place to Bury Strangers tour dates can be found below, along with a live rendition of 'Gimme Acid,' recorded last year at Union Pool. If you look closely, you can see yours truly thrashing away in the front. Was I wearing earplugs? Goodness, no.

The Cure: news and more!

Posted on April 28, 2008

By Frank Deserto

the cure.jpgFinally, some solid news about The Cure's upcoming studio record! After rescheduling tours, shifting release dates, and continuous streams of inconclusive information from frontman Robert Smith, I am happy to report that there's light at the end of the tunnel after all.

Acccording to Geffen/Universal, The brand new Cure record, tentatively titled 4:13, will hit stores on Saturday, September 13th, which, opens up potential digital distribution possibilities due to the highly unorthodox release date. No solid tracklist has materialized, but the band plans to release four consecutive singles on the 13th of each month, complete with several unreleased b-sides. The original rumor mill claimed the album might just be a double, with over 30 finished songs on the cutting room floor, but perhaps we'll see these elusive tracks collected throughout the singles, which will be available on 7'' vinyl, limited edition CD, and digital download. The first in this series, 'The Only One' (previously known on recent setlists as 'Please Project'), will be available on May 13th, backed with 'NY Trip.'

In the meanwhile, The Cure will be appearing live in New York City, wrapping up their US tour on Friday, June 20th at Madison Square Garden and Saturday, June 21st at Radio City Music Hall. Ladies and gentlemen, it's time to stock up on Aqua Net, oversized track shoes, and ruby red lipstick!

Elton John is Hot for Hillary

Posted on March 18, 2008

elton and hillary.jpgNot everyone has Obama fever. Tickets for "Elton and Hillary: One Night Only" at Radio City Music Hall, an event to help raise money for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign bid, go on sale April 9th, starting at $125 for the cheap seats and $250 for those of you who can just rattle their jewelry. Elton will take a break from his Las Vegas residency for the event, saying "I'm not a politician but I believe in the work that Hillary Clinton does." So much for grabbing the youth vote. And check that picture. Hold me closer, tiny dancer, indeed. Meow.

Panic At The Disco wants to pimp your ride

Posted on March 06, 2008

panicatthediscocar.jpgSee that car on the right? Emo-rockers Panic at the Disco will be giving it away to one of their fans during the upcoming Honda Civic Tour. According to a press release, the car has been "fully customized" by PATD, but based on the exterior, it seems nothing more than a teal hybrid with band decals. The interior dashboard was built with the band's new single "Nine in the Afternoon" in mind - - hmm, I don't know what that means either. Although this seems like a goofy promotion, it's nice to see that the band is promoting an environmentally-friendly product. You can enter to win the car at kiosks set up outside the concert, or on this website.

The tour kicks off next week in San Francisco, and will also feature Phantom Planet (one of my faves), Motion City Soundtrack, and The Hush Sound.

Nightmare Of You Replace Drummer, Add Shows

Posted on February 28, 2008

noy.jpgNew York's Nightmare Of You posted a MySpace message yesterday announcing that drummer Sam Siegler was leaving the band. Fans need not worry, as this was no coup d'etat, and there are no ill feelings on the departure. The four-piece, who recently split from their label and released a pretty fantastic EP on their own, will replace Siegler with Permanent Me's drummer Mike Fleischmann. The band also updates us on their future plans:

We are all very excited to be getting back on the road in just a few short days now. Your feedback in regards to these 8 shows has been incredible and I guess I should take this opportunity to let you know that your comments and requests have not fallen on deaf ears. We are currently in the process of organizing a full US tour. This will take place this spring and we will travel out to the west coast and back. Please keep in mind we can't go to EVERY city but we will be playing a lot of shows and hopefully you can find one close enough to you. More details on that to come shortly but for now please continue to spread the word about the upcoming shows and we look forward to seeing you in the coming weeks!

Catch Nightmare of You in Long Island on March 13, or any of the other dates listed on their MySpace. While you are there, listen to "You're Very Dear To Me." It's one of my favs.

Playboy's Annual Music Issue Hits Stands

Posted on February 25, 2008

playboypick.gifA promo copy of Playboy landed in my work mailbox this morning, leading to confused/curious stares from co-workers. The magazine was sent to stir up excitement *cough cough* for March's annual music issue, which features a section dedicated to the year in rock and hip-hop. The eight-page feature includes a list of upcoming bands to watch (the bunny likes Vampire Weekend), a few interviews (words from Ghostland Observatory, The Raveonettes, Jamie T, etc), and the 2008 Playboy Music Awards (Radiohead's proudest moment).

The feature also showcases designs from the Rock the Rabbit initiative, which had numerous indie, rock, and hip-hop stars create their own visual interpretations of the iconic Playboy bunny. The graphics will be printed on T-shirts and sold in Bloomingdale's, with all proceeds going to RockTheVote.Com. Daft Punk's robotic rabbits is my favorite. You can view the entire gallery here, which includes images from Iggy Pop, The Heavy, and many more. The featured bands participated in a Mick Rock photoshoot -- check out the behind the scenes footage.

Annie Lennox is Probably Better Off Without Her Record Label Anyway

Posted on January 16, 2008

annie lennox.jpgAnnie Lennox, who you may have heard of at least 15,000 times in your time on this earth, was given the royal snub this week by her now ex-record label, Sony BMG. Lennox's contract was set to run out this week, and her repeated phone calls to the label were not returned.

According to Soundgenerator.com, Lennox had the following reaction: "They totally ignored me. It was bizarre. It was a kick in the teeth. They didn't return my phone calls or emails for three weeks. I'm trying to find out what's behind it."

Seriously? Is the traditional record industry so washed up that they can't even bother with etiquette anymore? Maybe Sony BMG got confused and thought that "changing business model" meant "communicate exclusively via smoke signal". Still, if 2007 taught us anything, it's that you don't need your record label. I'm not going to name names, at the risk of overexposing a certain band on the LWMB ... but I'm just sayin'...

Indie Rock Politcs: Win Butler is Pro-Bama

Posted on January 15, 2008

obama.jpgEndorsing a politician is a very serious undertaking. Just look at karate expert Chuck Norris and his approval of Republican candidate Mike Huckabee. Celebrities often endorse politicians who support their fan base's policy preferences. That's why it comes as no surprise that indie rockers are supporting the election's most liberal candidate, Barack Obama.

Earlier today, The Arcade Fire's Win Butler posted a political statement on his personal blog, showing scathing distaste for Hillary Clinton and support for Barack Obama.

I am watching Hillary Clinton in her victory speech in new Hampshire...they just threw a bunch of college kids behind her, and had her talk about student loans, and had her daughter come out for a long awkward hug...does anyone actually buy it?

Surely young people are too media savvy to be fooled by this kind of shit.
do we live in a democracy so we can just keep electing the same families?
Barack is the first candidate in my lifetime to strip some of this bullshit away, and I just hope we don't blow this chance.
man if we miss this opportunity we don't deserve it...how bad does it have to get?

fuck!!!!!!!!!

Nice use of "fuck" there, Win. Anyway, as the so-called "Tsunami Tuesday" of primaries draws closer, I'm assuming we'll see more indie rockers show their support for Obama.

Hip-Hop Stars Named in Steroid Probe

Posted on January 14, 2008

50cent.jpg copyRoger Clemens might have company on the ‘I-Didn’t-Do-Steroids’ press conference circuit. 50 Cent, Timbaland, Wyclef Jean, Mary J. Blige and actor Tyler Perry were among an A-list roster of celebrities named in a probe by Albany County District Attorney David Soares. The celebs allegedly ordered performance-enhancing steroids or human-growth hormones from doctors and pharmacists under investigation by Soares’ department. According to published reports, investigators are looking into the doctors and pharmacists, not the celebrities who’ve been named.

Blige’s attorney has denied the allegations and told the NY Daily News that his client “has never taken any drugs in recent years.” So far, the aforementioned rappers have remained silent, especially 50 Cent, whose backstage dalliance with a certain illegal substance was accidentally caught on tape by a Croatian television crew in December.

What are the implications for this juicing scandal? Well, some fans might call for an asterisk to be added next to these artists' Grammy awards or Billboard chart sales; other fans might ask for refunds on albums and concert tickets. Any way you slice it, this entire affair might get very nasty. Now that sports and music are wrestling with the doping issue, other industries might be next. Carrot Top, we’re watching you.
