Kate Nash at Bowery Ballroom

Posted on January 10, 2008

Speaking of Kate Nash, I attended last night's Nash-foray at the Bowery Ballroom. It was my second time catching the 20-year-old Brit pop tart, and I must say that time does serve this young'un well. Easily more poised and confident than her last jaunt at Joe's Pub, Nash swept in and out of the famed venue, showcasing many a track from her recently released debut, Made Of Bricks. And I must say, she lives up to the hype.

Whether the vintage clad songstress is behind the piano for her more upbeat numbers, or with a guitar for the slowed down tempos, Nash commands attention with every long-winded musical tirade, keeping her appearance both age-appropriate and all the more charming. It's easy for young girls these days to try to act older than they are, whether in dress or in song, and I must applaud Nash for staying true to herself, no matter how quirky or light-hearted that may be.

But like all pop princesses these days, it may help to find some criticism. Let's start with the entrance. Sure, I won't tease you for wanting to make it something cool and different, but The Wizard Of Oz? And what was up with them playing the recording of "Play?" I was confused, to say the least. And since I adore Made Of Bricks, I was a bit taken aback at how sped-up the majority of the songs became live. I couldn't keep up with her! The best moments during the set were when she'd slow things down, namely for "Dickhead" and "Little Red." That was, of course, when I could actually hear her. Sigh, no show is perfect. But please, Miss Nash, take your time. No need to rush.
