News on McCarren Pool
Well this sucks…
According to Curbed, the paved performance space at McCarren Park will be reconverted into a massive community pool later this year. Last summer, Helio and JellyNYC hosted free Sunday concerts in the space with artists like TV on the Radio and Ted Leo, which led hordes of hipsters into the giant space to enjoy afternoons of bands, dodgeball, and Brooklyn Lager. Now, the space will be overrun by dirty Brooklyn children peeing in a very public pool.
The good news: We’ll have another summer to enjoy the space. The renovation is scheduled to begin in the Fall.

Geez…not a single person has gotten this story right yet. The pool will start to be converted into an actual pool at the end of the year. Yes that part is true but they are looking for other ways to continue the performances into the future. There have been all sorts of community meetings and surveys passed around about this, so don’t just say "it sucks", do something about it. Write to your city councilmen, send around a petition, do something, instead of just complaining about it.

See, i thought that "dirty Brooklyn children" was in reference to, well, everyone who went to the shows at the pool last year. Hey-yo! In all seriousness though, as much as people bitch about "hipsters", can we at least give them credit for finally making public officials aware of the enormous potential of the site? If it wasn’t for them, it’d probably lay empty for another 20 years. That said, it is part of a NYC public park, and a community resource, and should be used to benefit the entire community, not just the community who moved here three years ago. Plus, let’s be honest: it’s a hot, shitty concrete ditch. Location, location, location.
