Indaba Music
You've likely heard the story behind The Postal Service's debut album, Give Up. Basically, Dntel's Jimmy Tamborello produced the instrumental tracks, and mailed them to Deathcab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard, who recorded vocals and edited the final mix. The two relied entirely on the postal service for their collaboration (hence the name), and were never in the same room (or state) during the process.
Recently, I came across Indaba Music, a website that reminded me of The Postal Service story. Indaba users are musicians who can collaborate with other musicians without ever meeting. For example, a guitarist can post a riff up on his profile page. Later on, a drummer can add a beat, while a singer can add vocals. Each musician contributes through a shared digital mixing board, which connects to an M-Box.
The idea is extremely innovative, and seems to be working. The site currently has thousands of users looking to collaborate online. Anyone try it out yet?
