Jarmusch Goes Avant Metal
The LES’ favorite auteur has always been particular about his movie soundtracks. From Screamin’ Jay Hawkins in Stranger Than Paradise to RZA in Ghost Dog, Jim Jarmusch’s music choices have not only been iconic but integral, cohesive parts of his films. So it comes as great joy for fans of doom and drone who have always wanted their own off-beat but beat indie that his latest film, The Limits of Control, comes baring the credit “MUSIC BY BORIS.” The Japanese avant metal act might not seem so far removed from Neil Young’s awesome music for Jarmusch’s 1995 Dead Man, at least at their most mellow. Judging from the trailer, we might assume that Boris will be in experimental mode. Still, when the band releases music under BORIS (as opposed to Boris or boris) it’s traditionally meant LOUDER. Now The Playlist and subsequently Pitchfork are reporting the confirmed contributions of American acts Sun O))) and Earth, rounding out The Limits of Control avant-metal heavy soundtrack. According to Sun O)))’s Stephen O’Malley, the three groups will also be working in collaboration, creating a virtual supergroup of doom.
