The Prodigy’s Maxim Reality Reviews His NYC Show
The Prodigy rolled through NYC on Thursday and performed at Roseland in support of their new album, Invaders Must Die. LWMB met up with the UK outfit’s MC/singer Maxim Reality at his Soho hotel room on Friday moments before the band headed to a very important dinner at Nobu.
LWMB: How was last night’s show?
Maxim Reality: It was fuckin’ ridiculous.
Can you rate it on a scale of 1 to 10?
[Smiles] It was a 10; we don’t do anything less than that.
You and Keith were dancing around the stage like boxers for the entire show. How do you wind down from a show where you’re putting out some much energy?
I haven’t come down yet. Nah, you switch it on and off. Obviously there’s a buzz that stays with you after the show, but I’ve been doing this 18 years now and you get used to it. When I’m off stage I’m mellow and chill, but when I’m on stage, don’t get in my way!
You’re like a tiger out of a cage.
Exactly. Don’t ever try to invade the stage either and don’t get in my path, man. You’ll get kicked down if you do. I don’t mean that in a violent way; I’m just high on energy, and I don’t like things to get in my way.
Invaders Must Die is getting great reviews. How is the tour going so far?
We started touring the album at the beginning of the year and it’s great to come back to America. I wish we could tour more here in America. We just want to come here and spread the music. We’ve just played [last night] for 3500 people, but it’s like you want to play on a roof top and make sure everyone in America hear your music. You want beats? You want a show? You want energy? Come check us out ‘cause this is it! To come back [to New York] is great, and we’ll take our show anywhere people want to see us.
Judging by last night’s show the band hasn’t lost a step. Watching the show made me feel like it was 1997 again.
We’re better than we were in 1997. Those times were good, and it was like we were caught up in a roller coaster. Now we’ve stepped back a bit and we’re more focused and in control of what we’re doing. It’s all about the next show and we’re living in the moment in a better way. We’ve been through the rough times and the lull since 2002 and now we’ve clawed our way back because we’re hungry for it.
