Oh Land at Pete’s Candy Store, NYC 3/30/09
Monday was one of those nights where I happened upon an indie band I’d never heard of and they instantly excited me. Even the most jaded of us at Pete’s Candy Store were tapping our toes when the lovely Danish ladies of Oh Land gave a stellar performance on the venue’s tiny stage. The delicate ballerina-esque front woman Nanna Øland Fabricius croons soulful love songs like a siren, and she tinkered away on toy pianos and music machines. Her back-up singers were clad in party dresses and LED-lighthouse hats, and they could school any doo-wop group with their ooohs and bum-bum-bums. Their a cappella harmonies took me to another place on a dream-pop cloud somewhere between Beach House and contemporary piano/singers like Fiona and Tori. Denmark has been keeping great things to themselves! Mark my words, you will be seeing a lot more of these girls.
