Gorillaz Doc: Coming Soon to a Computer Near You

Now that Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett have stopped keeping the open secret that they’re the masterminds behind Gorillaz, the “band” is releasing a behind-the-scenes documentary called Bananaz. And here’s the best part: You don’t have to plunk down $12 to see it at your local art theater. They’re posting all 91 minutes of it online, along with a slew of extra clips. Starting next Monday, April 20, you can stream it here.
If the trailer is any indication, the doc will explore Albarn and Hewlett’s inspiration for forming the band. As they tell director Ceri Levy, they decided to record as Gorillaz after watching bad pop music on MTV and realizing they could do a better job with the genre. “People take themselves too seriously in the music business, so I suppose Gorillaz is an antidote to that,” says Albarn. They take the piss out of Pink Floyd; they goof around together; there seems to be a ton of performance footage. What this means, among other things, is that this will be a great 4/20 for stoners around the world.
