The Giraffes are my new favorite live band
Last night, I saw my all time favorite live duo, Matt & Kim for maybe the tenth time. Amazing as always. However, later that evening, I stumbled upon The Giraffes, who earned the position of my new favorite live group. Now, I'm a pretty calm guy. I like long walks on the beach, and a chilled glass of white wine with dinner. I never really listen to metal bands or wear black clothing. But since LWMB contributor Jens Carstensen joined the band, I decided to check these Brooklyn badboys out. Although the band's following is small, it is extremely loyal. While waiting in line to get in the show, some drunk dude in a blue jersey (turns out he's a financial analyst) told me he had drove all the way from Denver to see the band. Dedication.
So, how do I describe this ridiculous live show with words that are SFW? Tough, but I'll try. Imagine a slip n' slide mixed with The Beagles (Ducktales reference, kids), mixed with a whole lot of energy. Lead singer Aaron rocked the stage with an overpowering presence, showering the audience with whiskey, and dark melodic vocals. Guitarist Damien had one of the sickest solos I've ever seen, nearly shredding his guitar strings to pieces. Despite my pacifistic nature, my head was banging hard, and I think I pushed a little girl really hard in the mosh pit. The band returns to NYC on April 12th, so head over to the Mercury Lounge's website, and pick up a pair of tickets.
