Subway Beats: Most Popular Criminals

Posted on March 24, 2008

mpc.jpgOn my way home from work last week, some DIY rapper hopped on the subway, peddling his crew's latest album for $1. He gave the token schpiel: "Sorry to disturb your evening..." yada yada yada. The speech convinced me to shell out a dollar.

The album comes from Most Popular Criminals, a Bronx trio who've been making records together for 10 years, using the subway system as their main distribution channel. According to their website, they've sold over 200,000 records in that time. Yeah, whatever you say, website.

I gave the album a listen earlier today. I'd call it the hip hop version of Snakes on a Plane -- so bad, it's fantastic. Although the beats are nothing to be embarrassed about, the lyrics are completely absurd. I've pulled a favorite line from each song. Check them out below, and pick up a CD on your next subway ride.

Inhalation: I see you get jealous and mad, because I buy more blank CDs than your girl buys Maxi pads.

  • I don't see the connection between menstruation and blank CDs.

Ride: I thank you if you bought the CD from the bottom of my heart. This is MPC The Website is MostPop.Org!

  • Did you just plug your .org website in the middle of a song?

P.O.W: I'm getting money, blow my nose with a 20. Give it to your mother she gets germs from me.

  • You should use tissues and dispose of them properly.

Neva B: You ain't nothing that I'll ever be, my future is brighter than your TV screen.

  • How bright is said TV screen?

Tru: They tried to get on me 'cauz i went to college, with my student loan refund bought pounds of chronic.

  • Ah, the typical college experience.

How It Be: Dont like to ride in cars with lights on top of them, I'm taking ambulances and cops is driving them.

  • Yes, authority vehicles tend to have lights on top of them. Worthy observation.

U Know: I get email heat from the United Kingdom, Package [CDs] up and go ahead and sling 'em.

  • You guys are selling your CDs for a dollar a piece. Not sure if a trip to the UK is worth it.
