Kimya Dawson Births Kids' Album, Is in Talks with Big Bird

Posted on April 03, 2008

kimya.jpgNow that she's tackled teen pregnancy and achieved an astonishing career boost via the frighteningly popular Juno, Kimya Dawson is targeting a slightly younger market. The singer/songwriter/mother has just finished recording Alphabutt, a kids' album that includes, among other tracks, a song about pee. For a musician who's been known to use her MySpace blog as a discussion forum on poop, this isn't so surprising.

Alphabutt will feature the talents of Dawson's friends (including, bizarrely, Kevin Cadogan of three- or four-hit wonders Third Eye Blind) and their young'uns. As she tells it, the tots weren't made to harmonize, but rather sing, scream, and interject random thoughts at will throughout the recording. Dawson told Billboard that the album isn't "necessarily anything like a lot of other kids music that's out there. I think the songs are really free, which is a little different from a lot of other kids music I've heard. And I think kids will connect with it, musically, 'cause it's actually kids playing. It's really free and kind of wild."

In related news, it seems that Kimya Dawson also got a call from a certain Muppet-infested neighborhood known to toddlers everywhere as Sesame Street. Apparently the producers of the show are interested in having her contribute some music, though no details have been worked out yet. Snuffleupagus has declined to comment on Dawson's recent association with teen sex. Cookie Monster is keeping an open mind but warns that, in the same way that cookies are a sometimes food, unprotected intercourse is "a sometimes high-risk behavior."
