LWMB TV: Phoenix

When French band Phoenix decided to give away its anthemic pop gem “1901″ in February, they didn’t anticipate that the blogosphere would go completely gaga over it, nor did they expect the groundswell of buzz to result in an appearance on Saturday Night Live in April. “1901″ is that rare clubby/poppy/upbeat gem that has summertime written all over it, and I can attest that their fourth album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, whose official first single, “Lisztomania,” is almost as catchy as “1901,” doesn’t contain a whack track. The band recently came to NYC to promote their new album, which is out on May 26th, and I chatted with singer Thomas Mars about why the band decided to give the song away. (Look out for a full interview with Phoenix appearing on this very blog next week.)
