Iggy Pop to (Maybe) Reunite “Raw Power” Line-up, (Maybe) Make My Year

Earlier this week, I got to see the Vaselines play basically their entire discography–something I had for years assumed I’d never get a chance to witness. It was one of the best, most affecting shows I’ve ever seen. And now? And now! It looks like Iggy Pop plans to reunite his Iggy and the Stooges line-up to perform their glam/proto-punk classic Raw Power. People, this is serious! This is a record that has undeniably won an eternal place on my top 10 albums list.

Now, some of you may be saying, “Wait. Iggy reunited the Stooges years ago!” True enough. But Iggy and the Stooges—a rejiggered version of the band that formed in 1973, some years after the Stooges released their self-titled debut and Funhouse—is a slightly different animal. While Ron Asheton played guitar for the Stooges, he ceded the instrument to James Williamson for Iggy and the Stooges and moved to the bass. (Scott Asheton maintained his spot behind the drum kit.) The Ig says he’s laying the original Stooges to rest now that Ron Asheton is dead, but “there is always Iggy and the Stooges, the second growth of the band.” Meanwhile, he expects to recruit Mike Watt—who also joined the reunited Stooges—to play bass.

The plans arose out of Iggy’s meeting with Williamson last week in Los Angeles. “It was the first time we had seen each other in 30 years,” he told the Australian. “So we talked about doing something together. Raw Power would be the repertoire.”
