Punk Goes Crunk
I just got my copy of Punk Goes Crunk, the latest installment in the Punk Goes... series, and I'm slightly disappointed. No, not just by the album art. The album features a handful of popular punk bands covering classic rap tunes, basically demonstrating what happens when underprivileged whiny rockers play inappropriate music. As appealing as that sounds, the album seems like a cover showcase rather than a cohesive collection. Some artists rearrange the classics, while others just rehash. Nevertheless, the album is packed with a few catchy covers, making it worthy of a listen. Here's the track list:
Set Your Goals - Put Yo Hood Up (Lil Jon): The entire tune is sung by a Yoda-emulating vocalist, which doesn't make any sense to me. Am I missing something? 3/10
Say Anything - I Got Your Money (ODB): Disappointing. Both ODB and Say Anything are exciting artists, but this cover was lifeless. 2/10
The Secret Handshake - I Wish (Skee-Lo): Hipsters will love the electronic beats, but no one will like the drab vocals. 4/10
Forever the Sickest Kids - Men in Black (Will Smith): Alright, the album just redeemed itself. Sounds a lot like Fall Out Boy, though. 8/10
My American Heart - California Love (2Pac): Who gave these kids a vocoder? Instrumentals bring this one to life. 6/10
The Maine - I Wanna Love You (Akon): If I hadn't gone to that Akon concert last year (did I just lose my indie cred?), I would have guessed this was originally a Maine song. Nailed it. 9/10
Emanuel - Kryptonite (Purple Ribbon All Stars): A little too repetitive. All crunk, no punk. 4/10
Person L - The Seed (The Roots): Retro melody, soulful vocals and smooth guitars. Sexiest tune on the album. 7/10
The Devil Wears Prada - Still Fly (Big Tymers): Who knew a tune about being hood rich could sound so angry. Despite the lack of correlation, the rearrangement is original and catchy. 8/10
All Time Low - Umbrella (Rihanna): If they're going to sound this whiny, I'd rather stay out in the rain. 6/10
Scary Kids Scaring Kids - Notorious Thugs (Bone Thugs): I don't think this band understood the concept of this album. A lazy cover that sounds too much like the original. 4/10
The Escape Frame - Nothin' but a 'G' Thang (Dr Dre): The female vocalist gives this song a nice kick, but emasculates a macho classic. 7/10
Hot Rod Circuit - Gin and Juice (Snoop Dogg): Do we need another Gin and Juice cover? Not bad though. 7/10
Lorene Drive - Hey Ya! (Outkast): This sounds like the original, played in a broken tape player. 5/10
New Found Glory - Tennessee (Arrested Development): Ah, a shining light at the end of strange tunnel. A poignant acoustic arrangement, destined for a summer camp sing along. 9/10
