Woody Guthrie Lives on New Box Set

woody-guthrieToo bad Woody Guthrie isn’t around for the American Automobile Empire’s Blue Monday – we’d have a new parody anthem by dinnertime. Lazarus machines aside, anti-bigwigs and folkies of all walks will want to snag My Dusty Road, a new box set boasting tracks of cleaner quality than the flurry of collections released as of late. Rounder Records culled this treasure trove from daughter Nora Guthrie, who rescued the forgotten tapes from a stranger’s basement. Documentary filmmaker Peter Frumkin, who appropriated six of the recordings for his American Masters production of Woody Guthrie: Ain’t Got No Home, marvels, “… your jaw will drop … the sound is so clean and crisp that you’ll hear the songs in ways you never have before. The only way to hear them any cleaner would be to have been sitting in the studio 60 years ago.”

My Dusty Road covers four discs with its 41 tracks from the 1940s, featuring unreleased songs and many old faithfuls like “This Land is Your Land,” “Talking Sailor,” and “Pretty Boy Floyd.” A box set also means special packaging, and My Dusty Road doesn’t disappoint, including reproductions of Guthrie’s original illuminated lyric sheets, previously unpublished photos, and other personal gems in the guise of a small vintage leather suitcase.  Find your fight songs on August 25th.
