Radiohead Disdain Convention, Planes
by Ben Gold
So, as some of you might have seen, Radiohead sort of played "House of Cards" on the Conan O'Brien show last night for his "green show." But, since flying to New York releases the same amount of CO2 as driving your car for a whole year, the band stayed in London and played from their studio. I have to say, I like the idea, and not just because it's environmentally conscious.
First off, for those of us watching the show from home (virtually everyone) it doesn't really make a difference where the stage is. As long as it's not in my living room they could be playing in an underwater bio-dome for all I care. In fact, I really like the idea of a band performing from their studio, or at least someplace unexpected. Not only does it put a spin on your average, and often awkward, talk show performance, but could, potentially, add a new dimension to a band's performance. Just look at Pitchfork TV's Juan's Basement, or the French Take-Away Show. Those shows, the latter in particular, add new life to songs and offer an experience impossible to find elsewhere. Besides, isn't it more fun to watch a band play in a basement than one of those lifeless sound-stages?
Oh, and on a mostly unrelated note: from now on I will pronounce Conan as co-NAN.
