MSTRKRFT at The Roxy, Boston 6/11/09
Hmmm? Watch Real Houswives of New Jersey? – again – or go check out MSTRKRFT? Last night I chose the latter and I’m definitely not mad about it – even if my large iced coffee hasn’t stopped my head from pounding or my ears from ringing.
Boston’s own up-and-comers Hot Pink Delorean opened, tearing the cavernous theater in half with an electro pimp-a-thon. These dudes, who recently got some shine from the influential IHeartComix folks, sure can throw a party – complete with a hype man, turntables, a laptop and zip files full of serious digital madness. They aptly set the stage for MSTRKRFT, who literally had the sweaty throng screaming along when they dropped Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” It was a perfectly ironic moment – and that’s what makes these Toronto guys great. They can take a song like this that’s been beaten to death – how many times do we have to see Wayne and Garth in that Pacer singing “Mamma mia, mamma mia”? – and somehow remind us how awesomely grandiose it is. And they managed to make the classic rock gem fit seamlessly into a blaring set of bangers, which included cuts off their latest, “Fist of God” and their kickass breakthrough “The Looks.”
They even pulled an encore, leaving the stage to darkness for a few minutes before re-emerging after several minutes of chanting from the eager masses. Good rockstar DJ stuff and well worth today’s headache.
