Pharrell, Murakami Collab Art Piece Fetches $2 Million
Damn, this guy Pharrell is a real renaissance man. It seems the N.E.R.D. recently teamed up with pop art icon Takashi Murakami to create a work of art entitled “The Simple Things” that recently sold for $2 million smackers at the prestigious Art Basel fair in Switzerland. The piece, which features a Murakami designed character housing Pharrell’s favorite objects (a bottle of ketchup, a bag of Doritos, a condom wrapper, an Ice Cream sneaker, a bottle of Johnson’s baby lotion, a can of Pepsi and a Magnolia Bakery cupcake) sold within 20 minutes of the show’s opening.
The abstract art was created in conjunction with every rapper’s favorite broker of bling, Jacob & Co., who created Pharrell’s hodge podge list of items in 18k gold and set with more than 26,000 diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. Lil Skateboard P says that his inspiration came from just enjoying the simple things in life and wanted to put those items on display.
“I wanted to bring attention to the singularity and inventiveness of their original designs. Just like we find balance thanks to fundamental values, these pieces were born out of simplicity.” says Williams. “The simplest tings are the most essential to our lives and we are rarely pay attention to them enough. Originally from Virginia and now lucky enough to travel the world. I always try to rediscover the tastes, smells and memories of the first time the world revealed itself to me.”
I too enjoy the simple things, like just enjoying a good meal (as I reach for my gold fork and diamond-encrusted styrofoam container holding my lunch). I can’t front, the piece is a very interesting juxtaposition of high and low culture (those college art classes weren’t just for sleeping) and Murakami definitely does his thing, as usual. Now if the boy Pharrell doesn’t take a Ginsu to his ear, he might have a career outside of being a fucking awesome musician. I just wanna know if I can get a print of a print of this ?

What is an ice cream sneaker? I would wear (and eat) those every day!
Wow, though. I think I’m officially over Murakami until he does something new. This just feels like the same old same old with a trip to the grocery store in the mouth. And his stuff in general is starting to feel like celebrity collaborating for celebrity sake between this and Kanye’s video and prada bags and all. It’s getting boring.
