Supergrass + Nigel Godrich = The Hot Rats

Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey of Supergrass have teamed up with famed producer Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Beck, Pavement) to form The Hot Rats, a supergroup side project of dirty garage rock proportions.

The trio is already booked to play a series of festival dates in the UK, including Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, and Bestival.  Meanwhile, The Hot Rats are currently recording their debut record, a covers album, which will feature songs by Gang of Four, Sex Pistols, The Kinks, and Roxy Music.  The record is due in the fall.

Despite this new venture, Supergrass still remains a functioning outfit, as the band have also been preparing their seventh record, due out sometime in 2010.  This isn’t the first time the band has persued extracurricular activities, as just last year,  Coombes and Goffey appeared in concert as the Diamond Hoo Ha Men, formed briefly while Supergrass bassist Mick Quinn recovered from a back injury.

Otherwise, curious parties can take a sneak peek at what The Hot Rats are cooking up via their official webpage, which features a handful of live in-studio tracks.
