Oh, STP, You're....Back....

Posted on May 02, 2008

It’s official: the trend of classic bands reuniting has officially jumped the shark.

Stone Temple Pilots played Jimmy Kimmel last night only to elicit, at least from me, an overwhelmingly unenthusiastic “meh.” Scott Weiland is still doing his weird, kind of embarrassing dance, except now he’s old, balding (but doing an OK job hiding it with that hair-do), and wearing an outfit that was probably sold all in one package, like a Halloween costume, and labeled “hipster.” Robert and Dean DeLeo, guitar and bass, respectively, looked a little out of practice, like a couple of dads who, at a family barbecue, dug their instruments out of their mom’s basement and decided to “rock-out” while their kids avert their eyes in humiliation. The drummer seemed to have it together, though.

But seriously, of all the bands we’d like to see reunite how far towards the bottom of the list (if on it at all) was STP? Personally, I’ve always found Scott Weiland’s voice to be pretty grating, and their sound predictably commercial. They were always one of those bands that seemed to just go along with whatever’s popular—they were all grunge in the early 90s but became more alternative-y in the mid 90s only to become middle-of-the-road mainstream modern rock dudes by the time of their demise—and now, here’s STP, back to save the world when it needed them the least.

On a more optimistic note, we probably won’t be subjected to this for too long. I’m sure Weiland will get arrested or something and we can all go on with our lives.
