Subway Idol

Posted on May 02, 2008

Today The New York Times ran an interesting article about what it takes become an officially sanctioned New York City subway performer. According to the story, hundreds of people try out for positions at the most highly trafficked areas, like that long walk between the E, V and 6 trains on Lexington.

But, judging by the article, and personal observation, the MTA prefers to endorse exotic world musicians, Native American easy-listening groups, people who play weird homemade drums, which are all fine and great, but also kind of unfortunate because they’re missing out on an entire sphere of (literally) underground performance.

So, I’d like to take this opportunity to propose an idea to the MTA: what about holding auditions for the best subway car break-dancers. I know I’m not the only A train rider who shudders with glee every time he hears “showtime!” shouted above his headphones, watches with baited breath as that six foot teenager manages to pull of his back-flip, and has to restrain himself from giving a standing ovation when the little kid, who should probably be in school, performs his poorly executed, yet endearingly enthusiastic, routine.
