Happy Birthday, Joey Ramone

Posted on May 16, 2008

joeyramone.jpgJoey Ramone was a bona fide New York rock legend and, by all accounts, a wonderful human being. If he hadn't died in 2001, Ramone would have turned 57 next Monday, the 19th. But since his death, friends and family have been celebrating his birthday with a series of tribute concerts. This year's will take place at Irving Plaza and will feature performances by Mary Weiss of The Shangri-Las (Ramone was a big fan of '60s girl groups), Television's Richard Lloyd, Local H, The L.E.S. Stitches, and a whole mess of other bands. As always, proceeds from the event will benefit the Joey Ramone Foundation for Lymphoma Research.

Here's the complete line-up:

Mary Weiss, Richard Lloyd, The Smuftydogs, The Joey Ramone Birthday Bashers (Jesse Malin, Cheetah Chrome, Walter Lure, Tish & Snooky, Jean Beauvoir, Andy Shernoff, Joe McGinty, JP Thunderbolt, Al Maddy, Ivan Julian, Bobby Steel, and Mickey Leigh), Charm School, Semi-Precious Weapons, The Independents, Local H, L.E.S. Stitches, Rachel Newman, and the Punk Pipers.

"Little Steven" Van Zandt, Matt Pinfield, and Peter Aschner will MC.
