Album review: The Most Serene Republic – ‘… And the Ever Expanding Universe’ (Arts & Crafts)

the-most-serene-republicWhoever decided that The Most Serene Republic’s fourth full-length, … And the Ever Expanding Universe, should be released smack in the middle of summer is a very smart individual indeed. The Canadian sextet is known for its catchy, Mates of State-style indie pop. Their latest album only furthers that reputation, floating in on the warm breeze of “Bubble Reputation,” with its jaunty keyboards and boy-girl harmonies. It’s hard to tell exactly what vocalists Adrian Jewett and Emma Ditchburn are actually singing about, but they seem so happy about it, it’s hard to care. Some of the album’s songs, like the synth-tastic “Don’t Hold Back, Feel a Little Longer” seem designed specifically for sweaty, twee-as-eff August dance parties. Other tracks are all about light and space, like the sweet, tranquil “All Of One Is The Other.” The album even features its share of impressive orchestral touches. While sometimes reminiscent of more sedate brands of Europop, even the quietest songs on …And the Ever Expanding Universe are packed with energy, optimism, and imagination.
