Dandi Wind @ Knitting Factory 5.19.08

Posted on May 20, 2008

100_0289.jpgThe doors at the Knitting Factory opened for an early bill this evening, and as soon as the clock struck 9, Canadian synthpunk outfit Dandi Wind hit the stage, guns blazing.

This was my third time catching the incredibly energetic two-piece, whose electro-enthusiasm crosses the synthetic tones of Devo and Fad Gadget with the howling shrieks of early Siouxsie & the Banshees, and it was easily the most intimate. Though no more than thirty admirers gathered close to the stage, the band still performed as if their lives depended on it, vocalist Dandelion Wind Opaine thrashing and contorting while not missing a single beat; a smile planted firmly on her face as she maniacally swung ropes and faux-fur links. Meanwhile, instrumentalist Szam Findlay kept the catchy, throbbing beats and hooks flowing from behind a massive electronic rig, occasionally adding deep, husky backing vocals to balance Miss Opaine’s yelps.

Over the course of forty minutes, the band continued their sonic assault, playing a handful of new singles among several classic gems. My only complaint is rooted in the Knitting Factory’s generally rough and tumble sound, which kept Dandelion’s vocals a bit too low in the mix for my taste. Only a slight gripe, for every Dandi Wind show to date has been an equal mix of danger, excitement, and all-around dance infused fun. Don’t take my word for it, however- check out the performance of ‘Umbilical Noose’ linked beneath the cut, shot lovingly by yours truly.
