Vans Warped Tour at Comcast Center, Mansfield, MA 7/21/09
The expected response from a dude in his mid-’30s walking around the Warped Tour is “I feel so old.” But fuck that. This was fun when I was in my teens and 20s and it’s still a blast, even if I have sweatshirts older than the kids in BrokeNCYDE.
I haven’t been in a mosh pit in at least 10 years, but somehow I wound up in the middle of a sea of humanity at the main stage watching Denver electro-pop kids 3OH!3. It was one of those moments where you’re standing at a show, and then all of a sudden, you’re in the middle of a pit. I really had no choice. It took me about a minute before I realized the thumping on my head and back was people crowd surfing, but once I did, my instincts returned and I was soon helping kids move over the top of the crowd. And it didn’t take long before young skate punks were turning to me and a couple other older, I guess, “bigger” dudes, for help in launching them atop the throng. We obliged and, at one point, even toted one girl on a lawn chair high above the crowd to the stage.
It was good, clean fun, and what struck me was how friendly, co-ed and non-violent it was, compared to the bloody street fight pits I survived at Boston hardcore shows in the ’90s. It felt damn good, to be honest, and I’m pretty sure I had a much better time at the show than the other old folks sitting in the comfy “parents section” wearing earplugs.
