Icy Demons

Posted on June 02, 2008

icydemons.png Philadelphia's underground music scene has always been particularly open to the psychedelic. With a fair quotient of the scene still recovering from Friday night's Clinic show at local hotspot Johnny Brenda's, it's a great time to get acquainted with Philly's own Chris Powell's newish sideproject/supergroup, Icy Demons. Powell (credited as Pow Pow) is part of hometown heroes, Man Man, and has joined forces with Griffin Rodriguez (here as Blue Hawaii) of Chicago's Bablicon. While Liverpoool's Clinic weaves prog influences into a pastiche that ironically ends up sounding more staight-ahead pop, Icy Demons prefers their psyche esoteric, reportedly drawing a healthy helping of influence from the Canterbury Sound of the late sixties and early seventies. Their third album Miami Ice is an update of 2007's Fight Back! and will please fans looking for an abrasive update of Soft Machine for the postpunk set.
