Late Night Sounds: Top 5 on TV (Aug. 10-14)
Ever since Paula left the house that Simon built, the TeeVee music programming has been begging for a kick in the summer-repeat hideyhole. This week it comes in the form of Cobra Starship, who get a second chance at Conan’s house and… yep, blow it. The only thing CS is gonna make good girls do is go home.
The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien (NBC), Aug. 11
Cobra Starship
Owch. Singer (and we use the term loosely) Gabe Saporta apologized to Conan last year for an offensive showing – only to repeat his mistakes on the Tonight Show stage (with R&B tart Estelle) last week. This hapless version of “Good Girls Gone Bad” is a bit like watching your beyond-barfing drunk friend do karaoke with say, Neko Case. Gabe: Tally up your last month’s income, get a bank check in that amount in British pounds, mail it to Estelle for saving your scrawny saddo arse.
Grade: F
Dude, blow up my car! While you’re at it, watch the fine unwashed masses attempt to woo Conan and Crew into sending their jalopies into a fiery, televised grave. Ain’t that America? We nominate a mash-up of “Barracuda,” “55″ and “Piece of Shit Car” for the winning montage.
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (NBC), Aug. 11
Bat for Lashes
Natasha Khan pushes those pipes with the spooky needy-girl anthem “Sleep Alone.” She also seems to have discovered those “Rock Star” makeup kits they sell at Halloween Warehouse. Kate Bush and Jane Siberry, hit the showers: Your work is done here!
Grade: A
If the embedding is restricted in your country, watch this version from Later in April:
Late Show with David Letterman (CBS), Aug. 11
Elvis Costello
Elvis reels out the good-time, Southern fried “From Sulphur to Sugarcane” for Dave (who apparently calls Mr. Costello “Buddy Boy”) , which sounds just the right parts bluesy and twangy – until he utters the word “panties.” Honestly, I’d prefer to keep right on thinking Elvis is not schooled in the world of Vicky’s Secrets.
Grade: B-
Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (NBC)
“White Lines” Cover with Puppets
From the Dog Days of Summer Repeats File comes this retina-blasting “White Lines” lip sync… to the fuggin’ Duran Duran version! With puppets, for fook’s seck! This is why you should go to bed early, kids.
Grade: H for Holy Shitballs
Last Call with Carson Daly (NBC), Aug. 10
Black Kids
Normally we at LNS don’t dig the repeats, but since it’s August and well, there are a lot of repeats (thanks for nothin’, Carson), they’ve dug out this Black Kids’ mini-concert for Carson back in May. Tourism in their home state of Flo-rida is abysmal, so howsabout a happy dance montage to make it all go ‘way? In fact, “Look at Me (When I Rock Wichoo)” could be a great song for Orlando’s more “blue” venues, and really, doesn’t every tropical storm need its own theme?
Grade: B+
