Dispatch Reunites at the Garden

dispatch.jpgAre you feeling nostalgic for your college years? Well, dust off the beer-pong table. For this weekend only, Dispatch is back.

Dispatch is a band less noteworthy for its brand of jam rock than for its organic rise to fame. They formed as students at Middlebury College in Vermont and gained recognition without ever signing to a record label. Thanks to internet popularity and good word-of-mouth, Dispatch sustained a successful career for almost ten years. Their music is difficult to categorize. It combines elements of reggae and funk with a steady acoustic rock vibe (note: I am officially avoiding the term “prep school rock.” Because it’s offensive. It's a gratuitous use of stereotypes. And because, I went to prep school).

Also worth mentioning is their extensive work for various charities over the years. After the song Elias was written by guitarist Chad Urmston about his experience living and teaching in Zimbabwe, the band created the Elias Fund, a nonprofit organization that looks to empower the youth of Zimbabwe.

Three years ago, Dispatch attracted over 100,000 fans to its farewell show in Boston. For the next three nights, they will perform a reunion show to a sold out crowd at Madison Square Garden. The show is a benefit concert with the proceeds going directly to charities fighting disease, famine and social injustice in Zimbabwe.

If nothing else, it’s one of the few concerts that has the ability to channel nostalgia, and yet involves band members who haven’t hit thirty.
