Sigur Rós’ Set to Release Another Album 99.9% of the World Can’t Pronounce

Posted on June 11, 2008

sigur-ros.jpgAmbient rockers Sigur Rós’s highly anticipated Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (English translation: With a buzz in our ears we play endlessly) drops on June 24 and marks a series of firsts for the Icelandic outfit. Co-produced with Flood (Nine Inch Nails, U2, Smashing Pumpkins) and recorded in New York, London, Havana and Reykjavik, Með suð… is the first album in the band’s career to be recorded outside of Iceland. It also marks the first time vocalist Jón Jónsi Thor Birgissons—purveyor of the band's Hopelandic language/gibberish—sings (barely) in English on the closing track, “All Alright.” String quartet Amiina and a five-piece brass section help out on several tracks, while the band was joined by 90 musicians from the London Sinfonietta and the London Oratory Boys' Choir to realize “Ára Bátur,” which they say was recorded in one take. Sigur Rós bring their ethereal glory to New York City on June 16 for a show at the Grand Ballroom. In the meantime, you can download a high quality mp3 of “Gobbledigook” from the forthcoming album off the band's website. And while you’re at it, check out this very uncomfortable NPR interview with the band. Anyone know how to say priceless in Icelandic?
