Video: Jay-Z Hearts Indie Rock

Everything seems to be coming up Jigga lately. We’re less than two weeks away from the release of The Blueprint 3, and he’s gearing up for a giant charity concert at Madison Square Gardens on September 11th. Plus, over the weekend he confirmed his hip tastes by taking in the free Grizzly Bear/Beach House show at the Williamsburg waterfront, with Beyonce at his side. (If you haven’t seen the photos yet, well… just pick any music blog at random, and you’re sure to find it.) Of course, Jay-Z and his main squeeze have always had some major cred with the indie kids, as evidenced on Pitchfork’s recent, controversial Top 500 Songs of the 2000s list.

But is that love mutual? According to a new interview with Jay-Z (video posted below), it is indeed. “The thing I want to say to everyone — and I hope this happens because it’ll push hip-hop to go further — is what the indie rock movement is doing is very inspiring,” says Jigga. “You know, it felt like us in the beginning. These concerts, it’s not on the radio, no one hears about it and there’s 12,000 people in attendance. The music that they’re making and the connection that they’re making to people because of the music that they’re making is inspiring. So I hope they have a run where they push hip-hop back a little bit so it’ll force hip-hop to fight to make better music. It can happen, ’cause that’s what rap did to rock.”
