Iggy and the Stooges Reunion: It’s On!

iggy_pop_sm

Back in May, we reported that Iggy Pop was tossing around the idea of reuniting his Iggy and the Stooges line-up. For those of you who aren’t well-versed in the history of Ig-oriented bands, here’s the deal: Yes, he got The Stooges back together a few years ago and even released a new, disappointing full-length. But Iggy and the Stooges is a whole (or, at least, somewhat) different band entirely. They’re the group that formed from the original Stooges’ ashes, in the ’70s, and went on to release my all-time favorite Iggy album, Raw Power. While Iggy gave up The Stooges when that band’s guitarist, Ron Asheton, died, Asheton played a less integral role in Iggy and the Stooges.

Anyway! Nothing was sure in the spring, but now we have confirmation. Iggy and the Stooges are not only planning to go on tour, but they’re also going to be performing Raw Power in its entirety! Yes! The reunited band’s first gigs will be May 2-3, 2010 at a London All Tomorrow’s Parties festival. Guitarist James Williamson tells Rolling Stone that Iggy and the Stooges are in the process of lining up a slew of other dates… and he hopes to get the Ig to collaborate on some new material, too.

Williamson also gives the magazine the scoop on why he and Pop were out of touch for so long. “We had a blowout,” Williamson tells RS, during the recording of Iggy’s 1980 album Soldier. “We wound up not talking for twenty years.”After that, Williamson relocated to California, got a job in computers and cultivated an interest in Hawaiian music. The reason behind his willingness to reunite with Pop? “I was about to take an early retirement from my job in Silicon Valley, so I figured ‘What the hell, let’s do it.’ “
