Album review: Lusine – ‘A Certain Distance’ (Ghostly International)

Lusine - A Certain DistanceTexas-bred DJ/producer Lusine (born Jeff McIlwain) returns with a gurgling, robotic, hypnotic batch of downtempo electronic music for your next art show or cocktail party. Lusine’s soundscapes are atmospheric with an indie sensibility and a touch of hip-hop boom-bap in the vein of artists like Blockhead, U.N.K.L.E., Daedelus or even Björk. Mostly, A Certain Distance is comprised of ethereal, moody instrumentals, such as the chiming “Tin Hat” or the lulling groove of “Think of It.” But a few tracks include vocals, most notably the loungey “Twilight,” and Brazilian chanteuse Vilja Larjosto’s turn on “Two Dots,” perhaps the album’s poppiest moment. Yes it’s ambient, minimalist, downtempo and any other tag you want to slap on electronic grooves that clock in at less than 125 BPM. But don’t waste your time trying to categorize or pigeonhole this one. Just kick back with a cold glass of your favorite beverage and enjoy.
