Album review: KRS-One + Buckshot – ‘Survival Skills’ (Duck Down)
I don’t know what you’ve heard, but hip-hop definitely ain’t dead. The Bronx and Brooklyn’s respective godfathers of the mic, KRS-One and Buckshot, are proving that the heartbeat of the music is very much still pumping with their audio explanation of how to maintain longevity in the form of Survival Skills. For all those thinking that the veteran MCs have lost a step, just ask yourself if a 40-something Jordan can still take you to school on the court to this day. Hooking up with the incomparable Mary J. Blige on the soulful Black Milk-produced “The Way I Live,” the two trade verses on why they will always live and breathe the culture. Getting a little help from wordsmith Talib Kweli on the cut-and-scratch-heavy “Oh Really” is a classic example of the power of two turntables and a mic. The Blastmaster holds court on the Pharoahe Monch-assisted “One Shot,” reminding new jacks that “You got it all wrong / If you’re a true artist you know it ain’t all about selling songs.” The dancehall themed “Murder 1″ featuring Bounty Killer is a heat rock for all the rude boys. Showing that the only thing that time has done has sharpened their flows, KRS-One and Buckshot deliver an impressive set for
