R.I.P. Beau Velasco, The Death Set
As a big fan of The Death Set — a punk band headquartered variously in Brooklyn, Baltimore and Philly — I am truly sad to report that one of the band’s co-founders, Beau Velasco, died yesterday in Brooklyn. No details about Velasco’s death have been released yet, but The Baltimore Sun reprints a statement by frontman Johnny Siera from The Death Set’s Facebook page:
R.I.P. my dear brother, friend and band mate Beau Velasco. We are all so devestated that I will keep this short. We love you and you will be missed. You affected us all so much in the most positive ways. Our lives would not be as is if not for you. We love you. For all those who wish to pay their respects we will let the details known soon.
As Pitchfork notes, Velasco stopped appearing live with The Death Set a few years ago, although he is still listed as a band member on the group’s MySpace page.
The Sun also quotes Dan Deacon, who was Velasco’s neighbor in one of Baltimore’s best-known live/work/loft/performance spaces, the Copycat Building. “beau was the definition of a solid guy,” Deacon wrote in an e-mail to the paper. “i don’t know what to say beyond that. he was just a really great guy and its real shame what happened.” His sentiments are echoed by the fans, who are currently paying their respects in response to Siera’s Facebook note.
