There are few acts music bloggers like more than The Shins and Danger Mouse. So you can imagine the global ejaculation that has followed the announcement that the former’s frontman James Mercer is teaming up with the latter (who, for his part, between Dark Night of the Soul, Gnarls Barkley and all of his other collaborations and solo work, seems to be all things to all people, in all places at all times). The supergroup (super-duo?) will tentatively be called Broken Bells, and we can expect their full-length debut in early 2010. Plus, the pair seems to be thinking of the collab as a full-fledged band, with projects extending beyond a single album release.
Now, of course, one of those “few acts” is Radiohead. So Thom Yorke would have to come along and steal those guys’ thunder by announcing his own new supergroup: He’s just revealed that his new (and as yet unnamed) side project will feature Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, Joey Waronker (of the R.E.M. universe) and mega-producer Nigel Godrich. They’re performing October 4th and 5th in Los Angeles. “We don’t really have a name and the set will not be very long cuz… well… we haven’t got that much material yet! But come and check it out if you are in the area,” Yorke said.
