Video: Jay-Z at Glastonbury 2008

Posted on June 30, 2008

Back in April, Oasis' Noel Gallagher expressed vitriol towards Jay-Z's headlining spot at the Glastonbury festival when he said:

"Sorry, but Jay-Z? Fucking no chance. Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music, do you know what I mean? "I'm not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It's wrong." [Idolator]
I’m sorry Noel, but judging from this video, Jay-Z was exactly what Glastonbury needed. Taking the stage guitar-in-hand, singing along to “Wonderwall” is an obvious shot at Gallagher, but you know what, that makes me enjoy the performance even more—total genius.

Further to his credit, Jay-Z understands his audience, a true sign of a great performer (Kanye could learn from this). Adding a harder rock guitar line to “99 Problems” sufficiently expands the breadth of the track, making it better suited to fill the expansive festival atmosphere.

One final note: how do the British know about the Marcy Houses? Do they even know where Brooklyn is over there?
