Bill Cosby Dropping A Hip-Hop Album
“Theo, get your ass down here, I’m ’bout to bust this freestyle!” Not a lot of people remember this line from a lost episode of The Cosby Show, but for the die-hards that have caught Dr. Cliff in the cipher, it should come as no surprise that Bill Cosby is dropping a hip-hop LP. According to AllHipHop, the album, entitled Bill Cosby Presents The Cosnarati: State Of Emergency, is set to drop both physically and digitally on November 24 and will be available through his own site, billcosby.com.
While the Jello pudding pitchman won’t actually be spitting any verses on the project, he does take on the duties of executive producer, as well as conceptualizing all of the narrative ideas for the songs on the album. The aim of the project is to bring back a socially conscious message to hip-hop, something that Cosby feels has been missing from the genre and has been very vocal about over the years. But whatever you do, don’t call this bubblegum rap. While the accomplished Cosby says that the content is not vulgar, misogynistic, degrading, or anything of the sort, he’s not saying the music is soft, either.
“I don’t like referring to the music as clean,” Cosby said in a statement. “What I like is what you’re not going to do. You’re not going to curse. You’re not going to put women down. You’re not going to put the glory of the gun somewhere. And you’re not going to put a whole lot of violence up front like that’s the thing that will cleanse you and make you feel better.”
In addition to hip-hop, the album is also said to be sprinkled with elements of funk, jazz, rock, and R&B. For those wishing to catch a glimpse of what to expect on the record, Cosby and the Cosnarati Band will appear on October 19 via a virtual town hall meeting in New York City on Ustream. The festivities will kick off at 7pm and can also be seen on billcosby.com as well as facebook.com/billcosby.
Just a history lesson for you New Jacks, Cosby is an accomplished recording artist, releasing over 20 comedy and music-themed albums during his long career. He even won a Grammy in 1972 for Best Recording For Children for his Bill Cosby Talks To Kids About Drugs. Just don’t try any “Waiting To Exhale” moves on him. I can’t wait! The Cos has just gotten crazier and more crotchety as the years go by. I hope he enlists some dope MCs, though, because I don’t know if I can deal with 60 minutes of Cosby’s spoken-word ramblings if there’s no comedy OR jazz.
