Video: The Cat Piano (feat. Nick Cave)

2009 is shaping up to be a particularly productive year for Nick Cave. Between the celebrated release of his second novel, The Death of Bunny Munro, as well as the double-disc instrumental collection White Lunar, I’m amazed Cave has any time for himself, let alone to focus on the next proper Bad Seeds release.

I certainly envy the man’s productivity, but it doesn’t stop there. In 2007, while on tour with Grinderman, Cave lent his voice to an animated short by Eddie White and Ari Gibson. Two years later, the short, entitled The Cat Piano, has seen the light of day, complete with impressive 2D digital rendering performed exclusively in Adobe Photoshop. Unlike most of Cave’s latter-day efforts, the singer does not perform any music, but instead, narrates a poem written by White. Combining the beat sensibility of Jack Kerouac with the macabre imagery of Edgar Allan Poe, Cave was the natural choice for the poem.

Clocking in at a mere 8 minutes, The Cat Piano serves as a welcome introduction to the Halloween season. Click below to give it a whirl.
