Rivers Cuomo and Katy Perry: Worst Supergroup Ever?

Weezer

2009 may go down in music history books as the year of the supergroups. We’ve had Them Crooked Vultures and Tinted Windows and The Hot Rats and Bad Lieutenant. Recent additions include Broken Bells; a new collab between Ian Brown and Johnny Marr; and whatever the Thom Yorke/Flea project decides to call itself. But today, friends, I regret to inform you that the shark has been jumped: Witness the unholy mingling of Rivers Cuomo and Katy Perry.

Perry has always been a disaster. But Cuomo’s career has just been one long slide into mediocrity, beginning post-Pinkerton. Now, it’s gotten so bad that Weezer seems to be putting out albums that even the band doesn’t truly believe are good. And yet, Cuomo and Perry are slated to begin recording the latter’s new album next week. Or, as a schoolgirl-like Cuomo put it in an interview with Buzznet, “We’re writing together next week. Can’t wait!”

The only constructive comment I can offer here is, hey, at least they’ve both written on “lesbian issues.” So why wait for the Perry album to see how their aesthetics might mesh? Please, somebody, make that obvious “Pink Triangle”/”I Kissed a Girl” mashup — and quick!
