Epic FAIL: Perez Hilton’s Music Venture, Social Skills

perez-hilton

A few months ago, we reported on Perez Hilton’s record label and a tour he personally curated and branded. The line-up (Ladyhawke, Ida Maria, Sliimy, Julian Perretta, Eric Hutchinson, and Semi Precious Weapons) for the tour, which kicked off September 10, actually sounded decent. But the venture itself doesn’t seem to be going so great. The Guardian reports that “ticket sales for his tour have been so poor that prices have been slashed — in some cases to nothing — for the remaining dates.” Ouch! The paper recounts a particularly pathetic moment: “The tour reached its nadir in Boston, when the Norwegian indie-rocker Ida Maria, playing to 250 people in a 2,400-capacity venue, suffered a meltdown on stage and pulled out of subsequent dates.” Double ouch! The Guardian’s conclusion? Being a gossip celebrity (and an especially hated one, at that) doesn’t make you a musical tastemaker. Meanwhile, the paper notes that Hilton — who generally has something to say about everything, even when it’s in his best interest to shut the eff up — has been mum on the matter.

But that doesn’t mean he isn’t listening. Today, The Daily Swarm picks up a blog post from Maura Johnston, the Idolator editor quoted in the Guardian piece as saying, “His blend of self-aggrandisement, barely concealed agendas, misogyny and poor grammar is quite a noxious cocktail… He trumpets things like click-throughs to artists he mentions on his site, but the moment the users have to make any commitment or lay out any money, any ‘influence’ he has evaporates.” Sounds like a fair assessment to me. Later in the piece, she says in no uncertain terms that his music venture will fail. Hilton responded by blocking Johnston on Twitter, despite the fact that she doesn’t even follow him. Hmm. Touchy much?
