Power, Corruption, and…Postage Stamps?
Once again, the Brits have proven that they are cooler than us. Over here, we put Elvis on a postage stamp, and that’s a whole big deal. Across the pond, they’re dedicating an entire series of ten stamps to the covers of classic British albums. And it’s not just, like, the uncontroversial, old-people stuff. The list includes:
Pink Floyd – The Division Bell
Blur – Parklife
Coldplay – A Rush of Blood to the Head
The Rolling Stones – Let It Bleed
Primal Scream – Screamadelica
New Order (pictured) – Power, Corruption & Lies
The Clash – London Calling
Mike Oldfield – Tubular Bells
Led Zeppelin – IV
David Bowie – The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Now, I’m not crazy about anointing Coldplay so early into their mediocre career. But the other choices — Bowie, New Order, The Clash, Primal Scream! — are both ballsy and well-deserved. The Royal Mail will begin selling the stamps on January 7, 2010. Finally, stamp collectors and record nerds will have an interest in common.
