Boy George Writes Song About Amy Winehouse’s Pain

Boy George and Amy Winehouse would make a great team: aging, gay, ex-con, New Wave has-been meets beehived, drug-addicted diva. Wacky antics ensue! The pairing has camp potential for miles. They may even be soulmates. Unfortunately, no collaboration is in the works just yet. But Boy George did write a song for Winehouse, when he was in prison “for beating and falsely imprisoning a man in his East London flat.”

Titled “Your Pain Makes a Beautiful Sound,” the track, NME reports, includes the lyrics, “You’re a genius, you’re a car crash / It’s hard to say what you do best.” Apparently, Boy George had a lot of time for scribbling while he was locked up; he kept a diary and plans to release “a lot of stuff” next year. Here’s hoping the Winehouse song — for which video and audio still appears to be unavailable — makes it onto the tracklist.

And, in case you’re curious, Winehouse and Boy George did meet once. The pair enthused over their mutual admiration for the song “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss)” (co-written by Carole King). I can’t resist pointing out who else adores that track: Courtney Love, who has often covered it and whose song “Hit So Hard” seems to have been inspired by it. So, um, Love-Winehouse-Boy George trio, anyone? Is it too much to hope for?

Yes, and you know who else likes that song a lot? Grizzly Bear. They play it at almost every show. And wasn’t it co-written by Phil Spector? How about Love-Winehouse-George, produced by an imprisoned, bewigged Phil Spector?

Gerry Goffin was actually the co-writer, but I’m still enjoying the concept…
