Lil Wayne Pleads Guilty

Lil Wayne faces up to a year in prison after pleading guilty this morning to a second-degree attempted weapons possession charge, Rolling Stone reports. The incident in question took place in July 2007, when police discovered a gun on the rapper’s tour bus. The move reflects a change in strategy for Weezy’s defense team, which had previously stuck to a not-guilty plea. It seems the Lil Wayne camp decided to take a plea bargain after learning that DNA found on the .40 caliber handgun would be admitted as evidence. Had Lil Wayne maintained his claims of innocence, he might have spent up to three and a half years in the clink. The rapper won’t be sentenced until February. Until then, he’s had to turn over his passport but is free on $30,000 bond.
According to Rolling Stone, Weezy had nothing but “What’s up?” to say to reporters this morning — and his PR people haven’t released any statements, either. But, as for the effect the legal kerfuffle will have on the artist’s upcoming work, Entertainment Weekly makes the following prediction: “It’s hard to see this as anything but a major roadblock to promoting his next album, Rebirth, which is still awaiting release after months of delays.”
