Will Pete Doherty Live to See the Release of the Babyshambles’ New Album?

Like Amy Winehouse, the life of former Libertines front man Pete Doherty is a mess. He’s been arrested 13 times since 2005, and he can’t seem to kick his nasty drug habit.

On Friday the infamous poet-singer checked himself into another rehab facility, Cloud’s House, in England, where he’ll participate in group therapy, do chores and watch educational videos. Think he’ll find salvation at $600 a night? The facility’s past celeb clients include Robbie Williams and Boy George, so it looks like he has a 50/50 shot of getting clean.

Despite his multitude of personal problems, Doherty miraculously found time to complete Babyshambles’ new album, Shotter’s Nation, due on October 23. We spent some time listening to it this weekend and can report it’s surprisingly good. Produced by Stephen Street (Morrissey/The Smiths, Blur), the album is chock full of cracking (pardon the pun) pop songs that are simple, concise and rather well crafted. Expect to read a zillion more articles about this album in the NME.

Says the press release, “This is indeed the record Babyshambles always threatened to make.” Fair enough, but will Doherty be alive to help promote it?
