Album review: CFCF – ‘Continent’ (Paper Bag)

CFCF - Continent

Montreal-based producer Mike Silver, a.k.a. CFCF, had blog-heads furiously hitting the download link with his remix of HEALTH’s “Before Tigers” and his EP, The Explorers, which featured a fierce collabo with Sally Shapiro. Now we hear his cinematic full-length, Continent, a which is equal parts Air, DJ Shadow, and Hot Chip. Unlike fellow Montrealers Chromeo and A-Trak, CFCF isn’t going for a roof-raising party vibe. No, this studious up-and-comer is content making softly gurgling background music more for the dorm or the chill-out room than the dance floor. There’s plenty of funky mood music here, with a main highlight being the Fleetwood Mac remake “Big Love,” which is given a Miami lounge swing thanks to an infectious piano line and a bass-driven backbeat. “Invitation to Love” is equally loungey, while “You Hear Colours” is simply hypnotic, with a dreamy guitar-and-synth march and a nice distorted guitar solo. Many like-minded acts might be looking to be the next Passion Pit, but Silver seems like he’d be content to play the after-after party wind-down.
