Vintage Video: November Group – “Put Your Back to It”

november group

For today’s dose of nostalgia, here’s a rare video by Boston-based new wave outfit November Group.  The band formed in 1982 as a two-piece coldwave/minimal electronics group, and over the course of the ’80s, adopted more of a synth-pop/Italo-disco sound.  Their name derives from a group of German expressionist artists and architects from the early 1900s, who were known less for their unified art than their respective socialist values.

“Put Your Back to It” (which sounds akin to Yazoo and Bronski Beat) was released on the Persistent Memories EP in 1983, with this video appearing a year later.  Though the band never achieved more than minor cult status among a vast sea of new wave acts, “Put Your Back to It” is easily one of my favorites of the genre, a track that still continues to sneak its way into several of my DJ sets after all these years.
