Peter Murphy to Cameo in Next Twilight Movie

Let it be known that I do not care much for Twilight.  To me, vampires are becoming a far too common cliché in film, and I have to draw the line at teen romance novels under the guise of modern horror.  That said, I’m especially surprised and baffled by the latest bit of Twilight-related news, which reports that Peter Murphy, the dark and decadent frontman of Bauhaus, will be making a cameo in the latest film, New Moon.

The news comes straight from actor Billy Burke, who portrays Charlie Swan in the series.  In an interview with MTV, the actor revealed a few choice tidbits about Murphy’s role in the next film, due in theaters on November 20th.  “He plays a vampire in a flashback sequence. I didn’t get to see any of it, but all reports from the director David Slade and everyone around say he just kicked ass. I’m real excited to see it,” he says.  “[His role] started out as an old Spanish, sort of unrelated vampire, in a flashback sequence. Billy Black’s talking and telling the story of the werewolves, how they evolved, and how they met the vampires and stuff. [Murphy's cameo is] in a sequence that involves that.”

In some respects, the collaboration makes sense.  Bauhaus’ best known single, the nine-minute epic “Bela Lugosi’s Dead,” invokes the tried and true vampiric spirit.  The band even performed the track in Tony Scott’s 1983 film The Hunger, a more liberal vampire flick starring David Bowie, Susan Sarandon, and Catherine Deneuve.  Meanwhile, Murphy has made a habit of performing in bat-like poses for the majority of his career, singing various songs while suspended from the ceiling.

Even though Murphy’s on-stage persona has walked a fine line between art and cheese over the years, I’m afraid I just can’t get behind this one, folks.  I can deal a crop of indie-rock bands appearing on the soundtrack, but now Twilight has invaded my nearest and dearest, and I can’t help but feel a little betrayed.  What’s next, Robert Smith: the werewolf?

I have decided to console myself with the belief that Peter Murphy is suffering from a form of early-onset senile dementia and doesn’t know what he’s done. Otherwise…oh, the betrayal!

Peter Murphy is a huge hero of mine, but I think his involvement is more about being a hero to his children who are provably huge Twilight fans.
