Drummer Plunges to Death In Elevator Shaft

gerhardtfuchsDrummer Gerhardt “Jerry” Fuchs, who played in !!!, Holy Ghost!, The Juan Maclean, Turing Machine and Maserati, accidentally plunged to his death on Sunday in an elevator shaft in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. According to the New York Post, the Georgia-born drummer had been attending a benefit for The Uniform Project, an organization that advocates for the children of India’s slums, at 338 Berry St. He was reportedly stuck in an elevator with another person after midnight. Fuchs and a friend tried to leap over a gap between the elevator and the building’s fifth floor, but his clothes became caught and he fell to his death. Fuchs was later pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital at 3:33am.

“He was one of the only people we all knew who was literally great at what he did,” LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy told the New York Times. “And he was incredibly generous with his talent.”

Alex Buben issued the following statement on Holy Ghost!’s blog: “Jerry was the star of every band he played with and will be painfully missed by those bands and a vast network of friends, family, and of course, musicians and music lovers, worldwide. My deepest sympathies go out to his family in Georgia.”

Fuchs is the second !!! drummer to die in an accident. In December 2005, original drummer Mikel Gius was struck and killed by a car hit while riding his bike in California.
