Fucked Up Asks: “Do They Know It’s Indie Rock Christmas?”

fucked-up

We knew that it was time to celebrate when post-hardcore heroes Fucked Up won Canada’s Polaris prize, back in September. At the time, we were mostly chuckling over the verbal contortions respectable publications would need to put themselves into to report that news. But now it’s clear the band is even planning to do something awesome with its prize money. Are you sitting down? All right: Fucked Up is recording an indie rock version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” Uh, how flipping awesome is that?

As for the line-up, well, it’s already unbelievably sweet. “[We already have] David Cross, members of Vampire Weekend, TV On The Radio, Broken Social Scene, the GZA, Bob Mould, No Age, and Yo La Tengo all confirmed,” Fucked Up frontman Pink Eyes told New York magazine’s Vulture blog. “I’m still waiting on confirmation from Feist, Jarvis Cocker and MIA. We wanted the biggest people we could get. If we could get a Jonas Brother on this, I would get a Jonas Brother.” Uh, do I want to see what happens when Yo La Tengo, Jarvis and MIA are all in the same room together? Why, yes. Yes, I do. Note to Pink Eyes: Why not take the project a step farther and make a documentary about the recording process? Hey, I’d do it.

All proceeds for the single will go to charity, natch. And while there isn’t a release date yet, we’re thinking it should be out sometime between now and, well, Christmas…
